This striking, 3-drawer, solid oak Eastlake dresser was worse for the wear when I came across it. The drawers were falling inward because pieces were missing and it needed lots of TLC. After repairing the existing inside rails and creating new ones where the parts had been missing, the top of this lovely dresser was sanded down to raw oak and painted in a color called Refurbished Gentleman by Wise Owl Paint. This shade is described as being a steely slate-blue color with hints of gray and green, but it is a chameleon color depending on the lighting. The photos featured here were taken outside on a bright, but overcast day, so the color tends to lean more cerulean blue, however, it does change once the piece is inside.
The dresser dates to the late 1800s as evidenced by the sides of the drawers and their Knapp, or Pin and Cove, joinery. The insides of the drawers have been refreshed with unscented furniture tonic to add moisture back into the wood, and the outsides of the drawers have been waxed to help them glide with ease. Each drawer has been lined with a gold and white geometric print, which complements the original drawer pulls (updated in a burnished gold tone). The dresser sits on rolling caster iron wheels that seem to be original and work well.
Though the dresser has imperfections consistent with its age, it is in good structural shape and offers great storage. It has been sealed in a satin polyurethane and is ready for its next 100 years of life in your home! Available for pickup in West Falmouth, Maine, near Hannaford.
