This beautiful Lane cedar chest is thought to have been made in 1935 based on the serial number on the bottom. The top of the chest had tons of peeling veneer and had certainly seen better days. After removing the veneer, the top had cupped and needed to be completely unwarped. The unwarping process took several tries over many days, along with multiple heavy-duty clamps and weights.
After completing the necessary repairs on the top, the feet were sanded down to raw wood along with the top. The body was painted in French Eggshell, a pale blue with hints of grayish-green by Fusion Mineral Paint. The sheen on this piece is just right, and the color pairs wonderfully with the light wood on the top and legs. The top and body have been sealed in a satin polyurethane, and the inside of the chest has been refreshed with cedar oil to reinvigorate the scent. The lock remains intact, but the latch has been removed for child safety reasons. The back of the chest has also been painted so that it doesn't need to be flushed against a wall.
Imagine this chest as a coffee table, at the foot of a bed, underneath a window, or in a nook where you might need some extra storage and a pretty piece of furniture! Available for pickup in Windham, Maine, near the high school. Please see detailed measurements below:
